There was a sort of forced obsolescence in FO1 that made the Vault-Tec/Civil Defense videos make more sense in context: the world was pulp themed and out of date but the characters were intentionally normal. I get a lot of people dislike the grimdark from FO1 and prefer FO2 because it was campier and funnier, but for me FO2 always struck me as the same problem of Borderlands 2/3 Borderlands 1 kept the humour ironic or bleak until the DLC rolled about, whereas Borderlands 2 was just an endless barrage of memes and humour attempts (admittedly often quite successful) and 3 took it up to eleven to become a parody of itself (and much less successfully).įallout 3 ran with the 50s schtick far too hard. Fallout 1 definitely had the environment perfect.
